Candidate School (CS), Pre Field Orientation (PFO), Reentry, &
Missionary Renewal (MR, formerly SOM) Hiring Procedures
Each year the MK Ministry Office hires staff to minister at the annual Candidate School (CS), Pre Field Orientation (PFO), Reentry, and Missionary Renewal (MR, formerly SOM). We hope this explanation will help you better plan for your summer and also avoid misunderstandings about the hiring process. Our office makes every endeavor to ensure that this process is fair and just for all who apply.
HIRING DEADLINE:
The online application will be available to fill out and submit on January 1 each year. In order to accommodate our staff with their summer plans, we have set April 1, 2008 as the deadline for all applications. We will notify all applicants of their hiring status by April 11, 2008. We feel that these dates will give people sufficient time to make alternative plans if they are not hired to work in our programs. We realize that individuals will need to book overseas tickets based on hiring, but please do not expect notification before April 11, 2008.
HIRING RATIOS:
The amount of workers needed each summer is determined by an MK to staff ration. Below is a rough estimate of these ratios.
- Nursery/Toddler: 1-2 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Beginner: 2-3 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Pre-School: 3-4 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Early Elementary: 4-5 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Upper Elementary: 5-6 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Junior High: 6-7 MKs to 1 caregiver
- Senior High: 7-8 MKs to 1 caregiver
Please keep in mind that MT requires fewer staff members than MR (formerly SOM) and reentry. We are looking to fill approximately 30 to 40 positions for MT, 15 reentry positions, and between 70 to 80 total positions for MR (formerly SOM). Also, please note female staff are preferred for the Nursery/Toddler (0 to 27 months) through Preschool (4 to 5 years old) programs.
HIRING CRITERIA:
Each year we receive almost twice as many applications than we can staff in all programs. In our attempt to keep this process fair and just, we use the following criteria (listen in no particular order) to process the applications.
- Date Received: We will look at the date the application was submitted to the office.
- Application Responses: We do read through the applications and pay attention to the answers given.
- References: When questions about applicants arise, we will contact references and/or previous program Coordinators for recommendations.
- Experience/Seniority: We look at the number of years the applicant has worked in various programs. We ask applicants to list their top three program choices because not all staff can receive their first choice.
- Previous Application: If someone has applied to work in the past and was not hired due to too many applications, they will be considered before a first time applicant.
- Age: We look to see if the applicant is old enough or mature enough to work in the program they are requesting. Also, we look at his/her ability to work in future years.
- MKs Preferred: because we believe that older MKs have a powerful understanding of MK life, MKs are preferred to non-MKs—especially in older programs.
- Younger Programs: Over the years, we have found that parents prefer female staff when dealing with children under the age of five; therefore, there are more positions available to female applicants.
These are our general guidelines, but the MK Ministry Office reserves the right to hire or deny someone based on other merit or circumstances that you may not be privy to.
WAITING LIST:
The applicants not hired in the first round of hiring are placed on a waiting list. First round accepted staff are given a deadline to acknowledge their acceptance. If response is not given by that date, their positions are offered to those on the waiting list or to those who are assigned to their second or third choice. We will also be hiring part time staff for specific temporary assignments during the programs. We cannot promise that any positions will be open. Although we would hope that you will be available on our waiting list, we understand if you need to seek alternative employment. This will not be held against you, should you apply again the future.
